We Want A Win, And A Stache

It has been five days since I have written an article and it has also been five days since the Phillies last won a game.  See the trend?  I won’t put the blame on myself, I won’t put it on a celebratory hangover, and I won’t put it on your shaven upper lips.

I will put it on the Phillies.

The Fightin’s have lost five straight games since clinching the NL East title Saturday night.  Being out scored 23 to 11 in that stretch, they have entered their first five-game losing streak since May 22-27, 2010.  Not the way we want to be headed into October, at all.  It seems like the Phils have been playing under Walter Matthau (a.k.a. Morris Buttermaker) in this stretch.  It seems that they can’t hit, field, or throw.  In the last five games, they’ve made six, count ‘em 6 errors.

What needs to be done?

Well first off, the Phillies need to get their rears in gear and start playing some baseball.  Charlie Manuel needs to be more assertive and scold the crap out of these guys.  Just because they have won 98 games thus far, does not mean that they can let themselves go for the remainder of the season.  Although they might just be in a funk, it is apparent that this is not the team we all want to see in the postseason.

In an effort to stop the detrimental losing, Roy Oswalt (8-9, 3.66 ERA) will take it upon himself to throw another quality start.  His last outing was the last time the Phillies won  a game.  He owned St. Louis through 7 scoreless innings, allowing just 5 hits while striking out 7 Cards en route to his 8th win of the year.  With that start, he etched his name in the postseason starting rotation.  Little Roy will be the No. 4 starter for Charlie Manuel and the Phillies.  Beating out Vance Worley (11-3, 3.00 ERA), who lost just his third game last night, Charlie is going with an experienced Oswalt over a playoff virgin Worley.

Looking for a four-game sweep in Philly, the Nats will send out recent call-up  Brad Peacock (1-0, 1.42 ERA) to face the Phils.  Peacock will be making just his second career start, and he’ll be looking to befuddle the Phillie lineup.  In his last start, he threw 5 scoreless innings, yielding 2 hits, and allowing 3 walks in a 2-0 win over the Mets.  Philly has room for just one bird, let’s send this kid crying home.

Charlie is putting out a Howard-less, Polly-less, and Pence-less lineup tonight.  Howard is still battling a sore ankle which has bothered him for weeks.  He received a cortisone shot in his left ankle on Monday, and he said he’s feeling better.  Hunter Pence has been given a few days off to help nurse his knee.  Pence was diagnosed with  mild patellar tendon strain.

“I feel good,” Pence said. “I never really thought I needed a MRI. Hopefully I’m able to pinch-hit. I’m able to swing. A day off here, we’ll see Thursday. I’ve had it before. I can play on it. … I could play today, but we’re trying to make the best decision. And we feel like this is best.”

Let’s hope it is all well, Hunter.  I’m getting really hungry.

If you’re going to the game tonight, you’re probably already there by now, but don’t forget to look for us! We’ll be handing out 999 fake staches!  Part of our “Good Season, Let’s Grow A Stache” campaign.  If you can’t find us, drop us a line on Twitter (@thephilsblunt)!  You will only get one if you promise to wear it for the whole game.  We want Hunter to catch the drift!   See you there!
